You wake up with a stiff lower back or a numb shoulder. You suspect your mattress is either too hard, acting like a floor, or too soft, causing you to sink into a hole. You need to know which firmness level actually supports your specific posture.
Side sleepers need a soft to medium feel. Your shoulders and hips are the widest points of your body and create the most pressure. A firm surface will push back against these points, forcing your spine out of alignment and cutting off circulation. You need a surface that allows these joints to sink in while supporting the waist.
Back sleepers should look for medium to medium-firm options. You need a balance that supports the natural curve of your lower back without letting your hips sink too deep. If the bed is too soft, your spine bows like a hammock. If it is too firm, there is a gap between your lumbar region and the mattress, leaving your lower back unsupported.
Stomach sleepers require a firm surface. Sleeping on your front puts your spine at the highest risk of arching unnaturally. A soft mattress lets your hips sink, which puts immense pressure on your lower vertebrae. A firm surface keeps your torso level and prevents the pelvic tilt that leads to morning back pain.
Your body weight changes how you perceive these levels. A person weighing 60 kilograms will feel a medium-firm mattress as if it were hard. A person weighing 110 kilograms will feel that same mattress as soft because their mass compresses the materials further. If you are heavier, move one level firmer than your position suggests. If you are lighter, move one level softer.
Do not trust the labels on the showroom floor. Firmness is subjective and depends on the density of the foam or the gauge of the steel coils. A ten gauge coil is thicker and stiffer than a fifteen gauge coil. High density foam resists compression more than low density foam. These physical properties determine how the bed reacts to your weight.
The most important factor is the trial period. No matter how many charts you read, your muscles and joints react uniquely to pressure. You need to spend at least thirty nights on a surface to let your body adjust and to see if you wake up with inflammation. The label is a suggestion, but your spinal alignment is the only fact that matters.
The Role of Material Density
Firmness is not the same as support. Support comes from the core of the mattress, usually a system of springs or high density foam that keeps your spine straight. Firmness is the initial feel of the top layers. A mattress can have a soft top layer for pressure relief but a very firm core for support. This combination is often necessary for side sleepers who need comfort for their shoulders but stability for their spine. When looking at specifications, check the density of the foam. Higher density usually means the material will maintain its shape longer and provide a more consistent level of firmness over several years. Low density foams soften quickly, which can turn a medium mattress into a soft one within a few months of use.
Impact of Body Weight on Compression
Weight determines how deep you sink into the comfort layers before hitting the support core. A light sleeper stays on the surface, meaning they feel the softness of the top layers more acutely. A heavier sleeper compresses those layers entirely and interacts more with the support system. This is why a firm mattress might feel like a cloud to someone over one hundred kilograms, while a medium mattress feels like a brick to someone under sixty kilograms. If you share a bed with a partner of a significantly different weight, you must choose a firmness that accommodates the heavier person to prevent them from bottoming out, or look for a split configuration where each side has a different density level.
Managing Spinal Alignment
The goal of any mattress is to maintain a neutral spine. This means that if someone looked at you from the side, your spine would look like a straight line from your head to your tailbone. For stomach sleepers, this is hardest to achieve because the midsection is the heaviest part of the body. If the mattress lacks firmness, the hips drop, creating an exaggerated curve in the lower back called hyperlordosis. For side sleepers, the opposite happens; if the bed is too firm, the shoulder is pushed upward, creating a curve in the upper thoracic spine. Proper alignment reduces the load on your intervertebral discs and prevents the muscle tension that causes you to toss and turn during the night.
