Understanding SD Card Speed Classes
Stop guessing which memory card you need. Learn the difference between write speeds and read speeds to avoid dropped frames in your video.
You are standing in a store or browsing a catalog and see a dozen different symbols on small plastic cards. You need to know if the card will handle your 4K video recording without crashing or if it will slow down your camera during a fast sequence of photos. Most people buy the highest capacity available and hope for the best, only to find their camera freezing mid-shot.
To avoid this, look for the V30 or U3 symbols. For most modern mirrorless cameras and 4K video, a V30 rating is the minimum requirement. This ensures a minimum sustained write speed of 30 megabytes per second. If you see a V60 or V90 rating, the card can handle higher bitrates, which is necessary for high frame rate 4K or 8K video. If your card only says V10 or Class 10, it will likely fail during high-resolution video recording, resulting in corrupted files or the camera stopping the recording automatically.
Understand that there is a massive difference between read speed and write speed. The large number on the front of the card usually refers to the read speed, which is how fast you can move files from the card to your computer. This does not affect how your camera performs. The small symbols like the U in a U-shape or the V number refer to the write speed. This is the only number that matters while you are actually filming or shooting.
High capacity cards are tempting because they allow you to shoot for hours without swapping. However, putting all your footage on a single 512GB or 1TB card creates a single point of failure. If that one card suffers a physical malfunction or file system corruption, you lose every single clip from your entire shoot. It is safer to use several smaller cards, such as 64GB or 128GB, to spread the risk across multiple physical devices.
Bus speeds also matter. UHS-I is the standard for most users. UHS-II cards have a second row of pins on the back, allowing for much faster data transfer. If your camera slot does not have the physical pins to support UHS-II, a faster card will simply run at UHS-I speeds. You would be paying for hardware your camera cannot actually use.
When choosing, match the card to your specific bitrate. If you shoot 4K at 100Mbps, a V30 card is sufficient because 100Mbps equals roughly 12.5 megabytes per second, well within the 30MB/s limit. If you move to professional RAW video formats that require 400Mbps, you must move to V60 or V90 cards to prevent the buffer from overflowing.
The Difference Between UHS-I and UHS-II
The Ultra High Speed bus interface determines the maximum theoretical speed the card can communicate with the device. UHS-I is the most common standard and is found in almost every device that accepts SD cards. It uses a single row of contact pins. UHS-II introduces a second row of pins located behind the first row. This physical change allows the card to switch between different modes of operation, significantly increasing the speed at which data is written and read.
If you put a UHS-II card into a UHS-I slot, it will still work, but it will be limited to the slower speed of the slot. You will not see any benefit in your burst photo speed or your file transfer times to your PC. To take advantage of this technology, both the card and the camera's internal card reader must be UHS-II compatible. Check your camera manual for the specific bus support before spending extra on these cards.
Video Speed Class and the V-Rating
The Video Speed Class was created specifically to address the needs of high-resolution video. Unlike older classes, the V-rating provides a guaranteed minimum sustained write speed. V10 guarantees 10MB/s, V30 guarantees 30MB/s, V60 guarantees 60MB/s, and V90 guarantees 90MB/s. This is critical because video recording is a continuous stream of data. If the card speed dips below the bitrate of your video for even a fraction of a second, the camera will stop recording to prevent data loss.
For standard 4K recording at 30 or 60 frames per second in compressed formats, V30 is usually the sweet spot. However, if you are recording in All-Intra or RAW formats, the data load is much heavier. In these cases, V60 or V90 cards are mandatory. Always check the bitrate of your chosen video codec in the camera settings to ensure your V-rating exceeds the required megabytes per second.
Managing Buffer and Burst Shooting
When you shoot a burst of photos, the camera does not write the images directly to the card in real time. Instead, it stores them in a temporary internal memory called the buffer. The camera then moves the images from the buffer to the SD card in the background. A slow card will take longer to clear this buffer. If you continue shooting faster than the card can write, the buffer fills up, and the camera will slow down or stop firing until the card catches up.
For wildlife or sports photography, a high write speed is essential to reset the buffer quickly. While a V30 card might work for short bursts, a V90 card allows for almost continuous shooting in high-resolution RAW. This ensures you never miss a critical moment because the camera was waiting for the memory card to finish writing the previous set of images.
